For the individual, it's Steps 1 and 12, and a spiritual awakening from action.

A clear understanding of the alcoholic condition (Step 1) is vital, as is helping another alcoholic (Step 12).

A spiritual awakening as the result of taking actions which are contrary to alcoholic nature (sequential Steps 2 - 11, or equivalent) is vital to form non-self-serving connections to other human beings. This allows Step 12 to happen without selfish motives getting in the way. That's why it's Step 12, rather than Step 2.

For the AA Group, it's the 12 Traditions.

Is the 12 steps not the 'backbone' of the A.A. programme?

Never heard of the term backbone in relation to the program.

Step 3 is called the "keystone" but that's not quite the same thing, is it?

I think Jennifer is on to something here, from how it works -
This is the how and the why of it. First of all, we had to quit playing God. It didn't work. Next, we decided that hereafter in this drama of life, God was going to be our Director. He is the Principal; we are His agents. He is the Father, and we are His children. Most Good ideas are simple, and this concept was the keystone of the new and triumphant arch through which we passed to freedom.

If we didn't have a backbone our bodies would collapse, without the keystone the arch would collapse, the principle in step three is one area in AA that we keep strengthening. The idea that God is in charge becomes easier to understand and practice with time, without that the program wouldn't work.

In addition - this is a spiritual program of Action.
If I'm not able to say how I'm working my program today, then I'm not working my program.
