We have a 3 fold disease.

New to AA? Got questions? Here's the place to ask. Note that no one person speaks "officially" for AA. AA meetings in your local area are always the best source of information. Note that anyone may post and reply to messages in this forum.

Like the 'Invisible Boat', Joe.

The old drunks used to talk about the " AA Life Boat", reminding me to just stay in the middle so I would be less likely fall out...AND, leave the oars alone, the current knows where it's going.
Together, we don't have to cave in or wimp out to that Fatal First One, no matter what today!

Whenever I see someone too close to the edge or lounging casually on the gunwale, I like to rock it just a bit as a reminder ... ;)

Yessir!

And I have to add, if someone in AA tells me to jump, I try to remember to not ask "Why?" but instead, "How high?"

Well I had to WALK over the bridge of reason. As much as I would like to JUMP right to Steps 10, 11 & 12 I know I still have some work to do in getting through the Steps before I can be safely recovered for today. Until then? I use the tools of the program and the people in it to keep me from going insane again.
If I'm not able to say how I'm working my program today, then I'm not working my program.

What does the big book say about choice , in the first drink?
Choice is not involved in subsequent drinks, but what about the first one?
Thanks in advance for answering.

Choice is not involved in subsequent drinks,

no choice even on the first one. page 24.

Welcome to e-AA Citizen, good question.

The part avaneesh refers to is written in italics, and does end with the words - “We are without defense against the first drink.” In other areas of the book they refer to the mental twist and insanity, that has alcoholics taking the first drink, in Working with others - “Show him the mental twist which leads to the first drink of a spree.” A vision for you - “Again it was the old, insidious insanity -- that first drink.” Bills story - “Then came the insidious insanity of that first drink, and on Armistice Day 1934, I was off again.”

At meetings I often hear members who mean well saying it's the first one that gets you drunk, just don't take the first one, and then not mention what people have to do in order not to take the first one. It's not possible to stay away from the first drink without a spiritual experience, I believe that's the message in the book.
"Good morning, this is your Higher Power speaking. I will not be needing your help today."

There was the member at the old home group who lost 10 years of sobriety. His doctor said a glass of wine everyday is good for human heart. He didn't even think about the consequences, that moment the doctors words were golden. He didn't come back for another 5 years. We hear these stories so frequently these days. People relapsing on pain medication.
