Social Handicap Drinking.

Postby TakeADay » Fri Jan 19, 2018 9:43 am

I'm going start that my drinking revolves around being socially handicapped. I worked in the bar scene for a little while as a barback both for a beach bar and a downtown bar. A few years Into it became apparant that my only social life revolved around drinking and a bar and outside of that place I was socially closed off and felt a low self-esteem building up inside me"I no longer work in bars". Let me add that my self esteem sober naturally growing up wasnt the lowest or highest. Back to the point I now have this dread publicly when it comes to trying to have a conversation with anyone. I feel as though maybe Im depressed I drink maybe maybe 2 times a month now but the nights are not as pleasing as before I dont enjoy it and i feel even more depressed while drinking which usually ruins the nights. Ill end here for now.

Being a shy person I used alcohol as a way to over come my shyness.

As for being depressed will alcohol doesn't solve that problem. Matter of fact it helps it more to be more depressed.

Welcome to E-AA.

Have a good day,

I had a few acquaintances that were shy that drank. But my social problem doesnt have to do with being shy my ex can say that for me. Maybe I am depressed. Btw I put up a good fight I think of drinking everyday I usually break down once or twice a month.

Welcome here. The main part of your posts which caught my eye was this - “Btw I put up a good fight I think of drinking everyday I usually break down once or twice a month.” That is a life style I can relate to and remember, a crappy life in my opinion, and it led to me and others I have heard speak, and seen post here, just giving up and drinking every day all day. Until flat on our bottom and nowhere to turn we came into AA, to save others from falling that far down is something we try to do.

The thing is AA promises that if we do the program as suggested, the feeling to drink goes away completely, and this is absolutely true, even at a party or wherever we don’t have to ‘fight’ urges. I will put up links to some literature, and when you have time perhaps you will give it a read. One of them is to a chapter called ‘There Is a Solution,’ in that you will see three types of drinkers described, our type starts in the section that says “but what about the real alcoholic.”

Please ask any further questions if you have them, and feel at home, there are good folks here.
