Worried..PL help

Postby Roxy84 » Mon Aug 21, 2017 10:01 am

Hello everyone.
I am 33 from London. I have been a heavy drinker for the last 8 years. On a good day I drinkn 600 ml of vodka and on a bad day I can drink a liter of vodka.
I gave up drinking last Friday (4 days ago) cold turkey. For the past couple of days I am really Shakey, nervous, sweating at night etc.
Went to the doc today and he said my BP is thru the roof 200/130..so gave me some propranolol..he also said that it will get my shakes and side effect under control ..
But what I have noticed today is I can't really focus on things and I easily forget dates and appointment days etc..bit like memory loss..I am really getting worried..is this normal?

Hello Roxy and welcome.

Pleased that you made it to the doctor, stopping cold turkey like that can be dangerous sometimes. From my own experience, and that I have heard of others in meetings and seen written here, what you are experiencing is fairly normal for us, crappy but normal. Many find eating sweet things helps, and there is some medical backing for this idea, often sleep is a bit difficult and I remember weird dreams.

The better news is it really does not last too long, and after four days I would think it's starting to ease off, and you will feel pretty 'normal' in the next few days. The not so good news is that feeling normal tends to let us think maybe I overstated this whole problem, some urges to drink come on and we say well I wasn't that bad off.

We have a main text book 'Alcoholic Anonymous,' which everyone calls the 'Big Book,' I will put up some links to 3 chapters in that book, also some other information including a meeting finder. AA goes to great length to explain, that without the program and the steps we take, we have no defense against the first drink, we may just struggle and resist for a while, but will always cave in if we try will power alone. Those meetings are just some friendly folks and coffee or tea drinking and some chat, nothing to sign or fear or commit to, come or go as you please. It is the answer that millions have found, not just to completely eradicate the urge to drink, but also to treat some of the symptoms which have us reaching for the bottle in the first place, we come in wanting to stop drinking, we stick with it because it's a first class peaceful way to live.

Please consider keeping us in the loop of your progress or trials, ask any questions, you will come to find that we enjoy helping any way we can.

Brock is so talented in knowing exactly what to say!! He is right!! The brain fog, forgetfulness, etc. is very normal and will improve. By now the "shakes" (delirium tremons is the scientific term) should be gone or almost gone. Alcohol is poison, and coming off of it is not fun!! Until your brain wakes up, you might want to write important stuff down, set alarms on your phone as reminders. You are ok.

There is hope sweetheart!!! There is life after alcohol...I promise. And there is happiness and peace to be found as well.

This web site is wonderful. I am very new to it and have enjoyed it immensely. My best advise is to find a physical meeting as well so you can see first hand that you are not alone!!! Message me if you would like, I would be glad to talk with you.

Do you feel that????? It's a super big hug just for you coming all the way from Texas!!

Hang in there Roxy!! You are loved and I promise it gets better.
