Thanks for that explanation, Kate! An interesting read...

Re: Change the Big Book?

Any organisaton which does not adapt runs the risk of becoming obsolete. I think AA adapts plenty. There is a lot of AA literature besides the big book. The big book is the basic programme for recovery, not more and not less. There is a lot of stuff available, from AA and outside, that updates this...

Re: Change the Big Book?

Well, there have been changes, actually. The printed text is different from the original manuscript (which was written much more directly, using "you" instead of "we" in many parts), and there have been a few changes throughout the editions - nothing mayor though. Can you imagine how changing the bo...

Re: God either is, or He isn't.

Hi Ken & Kate, We're probably closer on this one than one might think reading these posts. I admit it is difficult for me to follow this. Not on an intellectual level, but to connect it with my experiences. The blue book that sits here next to me asks me to start with being willing to believe there ...

Re: Alcoholism - A Disease?

Kate,

Unfortunately not... I have the document; it seems to have been written by Cliff B. from The Primary Purpose Group of Alcoholics Anonymous in Dallas, Texas. No idea where they got it from, or who the chap is.

Re: AA - Divinely inspired?

My answer is "I don't know". I do know that, if I let it, I do things that are certainly not inspired by myself, and of which I believe that God does them through me. I can't see any reason why that can't be true for everyone. So, even if I don't know for sure if Bill really was having conscious con...

lol - Kate - take a chill-pill on the analysing thing! (affectionately said) I do hope that you not being able to pinpoint the exact and "correct" meaning has not stopped you from going forward... Here is my experience... My sponsor made me realise that a lot of the inventory is "same poo, dif...

Re: Rotated Up

Thank you for sharing that, Jim. "If you want to keep feeling those kind of feelings then keep doing those kind of things." That was a very compassionate, true, helpful and non-judgemental reply of his. And an amazing thing to remember. I hope the memories of losing your friends will not prove stron...

Re: God either is, or He isn't.

Alcoholic Anonymous states: “. . . either God is everything or else He is nothing. God either is, or He isn’t. What was our choice to be?” (4th ed., p. 53) The book presents us with the concept that we must make a choice either way. It doesn't really matter what that choice is, as long as we make i...

Having fun yet?

I was just thinking today... When I drank, I was having fun. Now I am sober, and I am having fun. But there is a difference. When I drank, my fun was always at the expense of something - mostly with who I really am. I pretended to fit in (and was very good at it), I sought not to be alone (at all co...

Re: Alcoholism - A Disease?

Another piece of information below. I don't know if it is scientifically sound. Actually, the question as to disease or not was not very important to me. I know I have a lot of will-power in other aspects (too much perhaps), and I know I couldn't stop drinking no matter how much I wanted it. It is n...

Re: Alcoholism - A Disease?

The paper I referred to above had as a conclusion The net result so far as Alcoholics Anonymous and the disease concept of alcoholism is concerned in the year 2000? My sense is that most knowledgeable A.A. members will acknowledge that while “allergy” is not really accurate, the description that Dr....

Re: Alcoholism - A Disease?

I am keen to know why alcoholism is referred to as a disease, why it is different to other addictions, and if anyone knows where i can find a medical reference to it as a disease. The book Alcoholics Anonymous does not use the word 'disease' to describe alcoholism. jimk Interesting. I thought it do...

Re: Spiritual Malady

Well... I looked up "spirit", and here is a whole different can of worms :-). 1. the principle of conscious life; the vital principle in humans, animating the body or mediating between body and soul. 2. the incorporeal part of humans: present in spirit though absent in body. 3. the soul regarded as ...
