Re: Can we discuss bottoms?

Remember, Bill Wilson didn't find another alcoholic who would accept help until six months had passed. But the Spirit had moved in Bill and he didn't question what had transformed within. Bill was certainly determined to help another alcoholic, but he was quite depressed at the end of those six mon...

Re: The Best Home Group?

I can't imagine why anyone would want to stay on Step 6 for six months. I mean it's just to become entirely ready to have God remove all our defects of character! What were these guys doing? Were they practicing their defects or what? While I was waiting for the first one to stop his "gimme" stuff ...

Re: How do I get started?

Thank you all for responding, I've managed to stay relatively sober today (only 6 beers and fighting the urge for another one ...it's a start). I plan to go to a meeting on Monday. I definitely understand "relatively sober", and I did manage to do that once at the very end of my drinking. I often h...

Re: The Best Home Group?

The whole group was doing their steps all at once? No, a "chain reaction" had begun when the first man balked at Step Six. That man died drunk with all the others standing around him with their books a couple of years later, and none of them were willing to back up to where things had begun going w...

Re: How do I get started?

I'm an alcoholic. Greetings to you, bw, and this is a good place to find out what that means! I can admit it here, but I have a hard time admitting it to the people around me. I stay away from people so that they can't see my problem. There is no need to be telling the world about our troubles even...

Re: How did I become a drunk?

I became a drunk by drinking, and I drank because I am alcoholic ... then alcoholism took over my drinking altogether. Heavy drinking ultimately does something *to* just about anyone, but alcohol did something *for* me that it does not do for all who ever drink. Where alcohol gives some people an un...

Re:

Hi there 'Scuse my ignorance - what's a "gimme virus"? Kerie He thought that now that he was sober he should have a woman, an apartment and a pickup truck (in whatever order), and he was holding out a bit at Step Six while waiting to see whether those things would be given to him. Waiting for him t...

Re: First Sponsee ESH Required Please!

Lee, I didn't ask that particular question, 'Do you have a desire to stop drinking?', I asked, 'Will you go to any lengths to stop drinking?' In principle, here are the things I find it best to address prior to answering "Yes" to a question about sponsorship: "[First, let him actually see through y...

Did you ask whether he has a desire to stop drinking?

Re: so early in sobriety

....i can do all of this...i just cant drink!!!! so early in sobriety and the rewards are instant...the rest is up to me.... We do not get rewarded for being sober, Ian. Santa Claus and God are two completely different entities. So, how long do you think you might be able to stay sober? Personally,...

“We have not even sworn off. Instead, the problem has been removed.” (“A.A.”, the book, page 85) And the sense exceeds the defense against the first drink! Yes, indeed: “Our thought-life will be placed on a much higher plane ... “... more and more on the plane of inspiration. We come to rely upon it...

I guess the phrase 'effective mental defence against the first drink' sounds glamorous enough to have a really clever explanation; at least it does to me. Oh yes, and the "common sense" we gain in the spiritual department in relation to right dependence does not come easily! But, it can come ... "I...

Greetings to you, Ian. I did not drink as long as you, and I only came to A.A. one time and remained. However, there are some things you have mentioned that are definitely part of my own experience, and I would like to try to be helpful to you. Like you, I had tried to stop drinking many times, and ...

Re: The Best Home Group?

I've often heard that if your home group isn't the best, make it better, don't go to another one and foul it up too. Great advice, and I sure hope to not make a mess of anything here! Belonging to a group to me has been one of the most important factors in my serenity, sanity and sobriety over the ...

I've heard a few times about having an effective mental defence against the first drink, but I really haven't got a clue what this is. Common sense. We would have no second thoughts about saying “No!” to a proffered swig from a gallon of gasoline/petrol, and my older daughter would not have to thin...
