Re: The Language of the Heart article & the Book

I was reading "Language of the Heart" this morning. In a letter to Bill on January 30, 1961, Dr Jung says, "His craving for alcohol was the equivalent, on a low level, of the spiritual thirst of our being for wholeness, expressed in medieval language: the union with God." Dr Jung touched Roland. Ro...

Re: The Language of the Heart article & the Book

How are we to communicate this progressive nature of this disease to the newcomers? By sharing that at least some of us once actually did have control over how much we drank while drinking... "We alcoholics are men and women who have lost the ability to control our drinking...which led in time to p...

Re: questions about the steps

I think that I completed step 1 already just by walking in to an AA meeting knowing that I needed help and could not do it on my own. I took Step One without knowing anything at all about alcoholism, A.A. or why I could not stop drinking and stay stopped. I knew I had lost all control over my drink...

Re: Step 3 part 2: ". . . with an understanding person"

I am profoundly private about spiritual matters and feel that reading this step with another person will make me feel exposed and vulnerable. But then it occurs to me that perhaps that's the point? Yes, at least partly, and that is why we have the part about it being better to "meet God alone" than...

Though a situation had not been entirely our fault, we tried to disregard the other person involved entirel...

Re: I'm a sorry excuse for a human being.

When do I stop wanting to drink????? My own question was more like "When do I stop drinking even when I do not want to drink?"...and that is what recovery via the Steps is all about. Having a desire to stop will not keep us from drinking, and neither will being a member of A.A. keep us from drinkin...

Re: HARD HARD DAY AT WORK

Stop and smell the roses, but discard the rose-colored glasses and watch for thorns along the way. Here is our deal and what we have been promised: "...if an alcoholic failed to perfect and enlarge his spiritual life through work and self-sacrifice for others, he could not survive the certain trials...

Re: doing it dishonestly

Alcohol is my addiction by far, the drugs are really just a side effect, but I'm aware that it isn't helping. I've been thinking that it is just to get through for a little while until I can start running the steps. Whether we drink our booze, chew it, snuff it, stuff it or rub it into the skin, tu...

Re: I do not share my story but want others to share with me

The " trusted leader " at my old group apparently have the actual original AA script... There really is no such thing in relation to all the fine details. Bill took the Steps in essence even before they were written, and the latter 12&12 is said to be closer to what he actually did in some areas th...

Re: 2 Months sober relapse ( I can't handle stress )

...2 months sober didn't even want to drink...sitting here typing this drunk... Hi, 303, and the first thing to understand is this: Sobriety is not a treatment for chronic alcoholism . If sobriety could remove "chronic" from alcoholism, there would be no need for any kind of recovery program such a...

Re: Young lady asked to chair meeting, what to make of it?

... I heard another woman in the room shake her head and say "and we wonder why some newcomers don't come back. Wow". The problem here begins long before any new attendee is either asked or given an opportunity to chair a meeting, and the solution lies in responsible groups members -- if there even...

Re: Girlfriend cheated on me her first week of sobriety

The transfer of addiction, makes perfect sense to me now. I typically consider the term "transfer of addiction" as being an element of psycho-babble, yet the underlying reality is that a sufficient substitute for the effect of alcohol must be found in order for abstinence to be possible... "'...I k...

Step One - the gift of desperation

...there are so many things that make retaining and hearing what is said at AA possible and impossible. Mostly its the willingness born out of understanding step one that leads new people to 'hear' what they need to hear so they can follow up and continue in sobriety with the Steps. Well, that was ...

Re: Wrestling with Step 3

I used to think I believed in God... ...willingness is a beginning to the 3rd step...and it's almost like I have a cognitive block to understanding it. Like, it just doesn't compute. The first think to understand here is that Step Two is not a theological exercise. Instead, and quite simply: "We ne...
