Re: Am I an Alcoholic?

Thank you so much. My reaction to alcohol has seemed so normal until recently. I never truly noticed that there are others that can stop after one drink. I think what is hard is that so many stories are about people who are on the extreme end of the spectrum. I am functioning quite well. So I'm fin...

Re: Am I an Alcoholic?

Welcome to this forum, R95. From your description, you could be an alcoholic. The frequent blackouts are a key indicator. I drank like you do, including with the blackouts. I am an alcoholic. At some point I needed to ask for help. And AA helped me get and stay sober. Are you afraid of being an alco...

Re: Finally ready to be done before its too late

OK.
Going to a meeting to get you started is the conventional advice. And it is usually helpful.

What do you want to know about a meeting?

Going to one soon is probably a good idea. I went to my first meeting on my 2nd day sober.

Re: Can’t find a new sponsor

Odaat....I thanked her profusely! I told her how integral she was to my remaining sober. I’m sad she no longer wants any type of relationship with me. Very good. Now, that's in the past. You both gain by the experience. People changing sponsors is not unusual. Even Bill Wilson, cofounder of AA, cha...

Re: Can’t find a new sponsor

It took me about 10 to 14 months to get a sponsor. I don't remember exactly.

Make sure you thank your ex-sponsor. She did fine AA service with you.

Re: Take what you need and leave the rest?

Westie, if you have a problem with alcohol, you're welcome anytime and anywhere in AA. But sometimes individuals in AA get a little too enthusiastic about certain facets of the AA program. This can deter newcomers from readily seeing the openness of the program. That's what some individuals do. But ...

Re: Time to change.

Welcome, Kipsley. Am glad you found us. Am glad you are in the contemplation stage of taking action about your problem. I can identify with your story. I drank like you, I went to work like you, I deteriorated like you. I worried like you do. Eventually, I did something about my problem. And it save...

Re: Step 1 Soooooo Unmanageable

You're well within the timeline, BR. There is a fair amount of variation in how long they take in starting and finishing the steps. There are few absolutes in doing the steps. People do them differently. A lot depends on your willingness and honesty. Your sponsor will guide you. It's very positive t...

Re: Character defects

This character defect is affecting your sobriety and it's OK to begin addressing it. Including by using wisdom from various steps, in this case steps 6, 7, 10. You're already addressing it using step 5 principles. Your sponsor can help in situations like this. The idea in AA is to grow spiritually. ...

Re: Trusting a Sponsor

Here is one thing I didn't see in the above discussion... You are writing this stuff down! That's as good as a confession Good point, one not covered specifically by the BB or the 12 & 12. There was a case a few years ago in Alabama where an AA (Jamie L.) discussed a murder she had committed with h...

Re: Trusting a Sponsor

Welcome to the forum, AR. I'm glad you came to AA. You bring up a tough problem regarding steps 4 and 5. There is no way to completely assure a sponsor doesn't dilvulge to others information you entrust to him. Further, in a legitimate police investigation, your sponsor could be forced to retell wha...
