Re: What's your favourite piece out of the Big Book?

Had to add one more...

Pg 61

"Is he not a victim of the delusion that he can wrest happiness and satisfaction out of this world if he only manages well."

Still doing this one but working on it.

Re: What's your favourite piece out of the Big Book?

I don't have my book with me but the one that pops into my head is Pg. 164 "Our book is meant to suggestive only, we realize we know only a little. God will constantly disclose more to you and to us. Ask him in your morning meditation what you can do each day for the man who is still sick. The answe...

Re: Sobriety and pain meds: At odds with my sponsor, help

A person either has sobriety or they do not...there is no in between. If misusing pain medications, gambling, sex, anger, alcohol, shopping etc. This person has become sick and does not have sobriety no matter what fellowship we are in. It would be best not to be overly concerned with a "Sobriety d...

Re: The fun of Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome (noob)

A simple way I like to put this higher power thing is I have faith that there is a power greater than me and faith in the AA program.

Faith is not belief without proof but trust without reservation!

Re: The fun of Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome (noob)

So I'm not sure if you are working the steps or not. I'm going to assume for now that you are not. If that is the case then you may be jumping the gun on this whole higher power thing. The first direction I give new people is to read from the preface to page 164 in the big book. Read it like a novel...

Re: The fun of Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome (noob)

Well have you read the chapter to the agnostics? This is not a religious program but a spiritual one. I'm assuming you don't believe in a higher power? Believe me I know how the word God gives people the willies because it did that to me when I first started. I didn't want anything to do with God, b...

Re: The fun of Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome (noob)

Man I can relate to the AWS. I remind myself daily how powerless I am over alcohol and how my last drunk lasted more than a month. I ended up in the hospital with DTs and went through hell for about 5 days. But I'm living proof that a hopeless drunk can find a way to live a happy useful life one day...

Re: I'm Will....

I was not suggesting that white knuckling isn't a part of recovery because I definitely went through that. What I was saying that once I started to work the program and apply it to my life I began to get relief. I was in a hospital bed for 5 days going through DTs so believe me I know how white knuc...

Re: Male Sponsor Needed, Apply Within

I think the reason you see Brock's response as being pompous is that you are new to this sobriety thing. I remember being new and the oldtimers used to piss me off too. But as time goes on you will grow to understand that the things the oldtimers say are not because they lack personality or that the...

Re: I'm Will....

Don't fool yourself either whiteknuckling is not the way to promote contented sobriety. I know how tough it is in the beginning but the obsession did not leave until I worked the 12 steps out of the Big Book. Do you have a Big Book? A sponsor? I couldn't do this thing alone and if I had tried I woul...

Re: i'm new and need advice

Hello AliBear and welcome. I have had similar situations with women in my life and friends. I did some incredibly terrible things while drinking and remember feeling exactly the way you do at this moment. My first suggestion is to get a Big Book and read the first 164 pages and look for the similari...

Re: Feeling better!!

Congrats on 11 days!! It gets better and better. I agree that sobriety should be number 1. The way it worked for me is taking action one day at a time and work the steps thoroughly and honestly from the very start. Meetings are important for me but the true miracle didn't really happen for me until ...

Re: Step one- never tried this before

I can relate to the one hour at a time. Early in recovery it was sometimes one second at a time. Every time I start to question if I'm truly powerless I think back to detoxing and almost dying in a hospital bed. I think of that hopeless state of mind and body and how much I don't want to go back the...
