Re: New here. looking for some help

I didn't drink but I went through hell so I drank a Pepsi. Keep drinking Pepsi. Pretty soon you will reach for one of those, instead of alcohol, out of habit. You won't give it a second thought. I did lots of replacement therapy at the beginning, too. It was all I knew to do. Early recovery is all ...

Re: AA or NA

That was perfect, Maurits and Paige. I'm hope you don't mind if I use that. You hit the nail on the head. It took a while for me to learn that saying I was a "functional" alcoholic was just my ego talking, trying to differentiate me from "regular" alcoholics. This is no different, really. We need a ...

Re: Resentments against self in Step 4?

You make a good point. But even the authors of the book did not presume to think they would ever be the final word in recovery. In fact, they did their best to dissuade any of us that might think that. Our book is meant to be suggestive only. We realize we know only a little . God will constantly di...

Re: Resentments against self in Step 4?

I'm not sure you missed anything, stepchild. As has been pointed out elsewhere in this thread, there is no specific instruction to do this. From his own experience, and the experience of others, my sponsor suggested that I do that, however. Maybe he saw or heard something in me that made it seem imp...

Re: Husband started Drinking; I am still sober

First, I have to say that you sound like an intelligent, well grounded person. Your husband is lucky to have you, especially now. Layne brought up a point that I think bears repeating, especially combined with Ann's point that no one is going to be able to guide your husband to the correct choices. ...

Re: Qualify to Chair a Meeting

I'm not real sure why length of sobriety has anything to do with it....I'd prefer someone that has had a spiritual awakening as the result of the steps. I've seen people in AA with a year sober that don't have a clue...That boast they have never even read the book...Forget about the steps. What eve...

Re: I'm new

You sound like you are on the right track, Lizard. I'd like to commend you for your attitude and make a suggestion that helped me. You see, I spent the better part of ten years in and out of AA rooms -- mostly out. I kept expecting that the act of just attending meetings, without doing anything else...

Re: I'm new

I agree wholeheartedly with Paige. What she said, as difficult as it it to accept, is spot on in my book. It is a good thing to regret what we have done to others, the hurt and pain we have inflicted on them. And, personally, I never want to forget how those memories make me feel. If I do remember, ...

Re: The Story Irma Livoni, circa 1941

Wow. This is a major reason why I love e-AA -- it is a treasure trove of interesting information. This one is new to me, and reading it actually gave me the shivers. I live in an area where we regularly have debates about "who should or should not" consider themselves members of the various groups. ...

Re: day five and question about the cravings

Couldn't agree more with either of the response so far. First I had to realize that I could NOT control the cravings. The cravings come because, over the years of drinking, I became habituated. The cravings are there as a result of my giving in to them over and over again. They are not going to stop...

Re: Wonder if I Made a Mistake

Hi, Chris. Thanks for the very timely topic, at least for me. A couple of thoughts.... I'm in a period of life that I will call "Restlessness and Discontent." No, there is nothing wrong, at least nothing more than usual. But, then again, nothing feels quite right either. I feel like I should be doin...

Re: Empty Beer Cans on the Curbside!

Thanks for making me chuckle! Isn't it amazing the lengths to which we went to "prove" that we could control our drinking? That we were in charge? Anyway, stories like this are the reason we can help other alcoholics. We understand the insanity. We speak the language.

Neutrality

We feel as though we had been placed in a position of neutrality - safe and protected. We have not even sworn off. Instead, the problem has been removed. It does not exist for us. We are neither cocky nor are we afraid. That is our experience. (Alcoholics Anonymous, p.85) Not long ago I would -- an...

Re: I relapsed the same day I got my 30 day chip...

I have been following the program for the past 30 days. The past month has been blanking miserable. When I first read this, I almost stopped after the second sentence. But I read the rest anyway. Still, that second sentence said it all to me. Over the course of my drinking career, I did a few dozen...
