Is it unhealthy for suicide to be a comforting thought?

It is often reported that people are unusually happy in the days or hours preceding their suicide. It is suspected that this is because the person has made the decision and has the weight in their life lifted from their shoulders. I think that theory has some truth to it. Very often I will find mys...

Re: How can I help my mother?

Thank you all for your responses. I talked to my aunt (her sister) and we are getting her help. She's going to go back to rehab and I'm going to try and be more active in her recovery. I think in the past I haven't done all I can to be there for her.

How can I help my mother?

Last night my mother called (she is an alcoholic of 20 years) and she has always suffered from severe depression. She told me that life isn't worth living and the only reason she doesn't commit suicide is because she would be abandoning me. She then asked for my permission for her to commit suicide....

Two of you mention Alanon and I think I'll look into that, thanks. :)

Where did you go to treatment and what did you think of it?

Where did you go to treatment and what did you think of it? I went to a rehab here in south Louisiana and I've met some really incredible people. It was like a spiritual retreat for me. I think it might have been the best experience of my life. It certainly was the most life-changing experience.

Re: What is your Higher Power?

I'm an agnostic and I believe that I have the strength within myself to do it but I just need to find that strength and so I guess my hp would be my friends and family all around me, and the want inside of myself that wants to overcome it.

Re: Any suggestions??

May I ask? Are you bipolar? I know from experience with my mother that many people will combat bipolarity with drinking. Perhaps your thoughts and agitations are just manifestations of your bipolarity and they are just being able to manifest now because you are no longer self-medicating. I would sug...

Need some advice to help my mother stay sober

My mother has been an alcoholic all of her life and she always backslides when she dates the wrong guy. There was a period of her life in her early 30s (she's 40 now) when she dated this guy who was right for her and she was sober for 5 years straight. After she broke up with him, she dated all the ...

Re: STEP 11 / PRAYER

Dealing with this step as an atheist, I simply try to believe that I do have it inside of myself to do it on my own, but it's a strength that I must find.

Who should I choose as my sponsor?

I have two choices. I have my girlfriend and my mom. On one hand, my mom is also a recovering alcoholic, but she often relapses, so I don't know if she would really be a reliable choice. On the other hand, my girlfriend is my girlfriend, which means she may or may not be a permanent factor in my life.

Re: I believe in a power greater than me...don't I?

I don't believe in a greater power (not to be rude or start any debates, it's just what I believe), so I accepted that I have a problem and then skipped this step and I believe in myself that I can overcome this illness, and it's working.

Revisions of Steps 2 and 3

Let me say this first: I imagine that most of you would probably not agree or want to even entertain this thought. I don't mean to offend anyone with this post, but merely present my point of view. This is for people (like me) who do not believe in a higher power in the sense that the 12 step progra...

Re: I believe in a power greater than me...don't I?

You are describing yourself as a deist, which (in practical terms) is indistinguishable from an atheist (like me), who believes that we are left to ourselves to find our own confidence and to find faith (trust) in ourselves in order to develop a strength to overcome addiction. Instead of accepting t...

Re: Higher Power

I don't think you have to believe in a god to believe in a higher power, nor does your "faith meter" have to go "above zero". I think if any faith needs to be had, it's faith in yourself (using the definition that means "trust" and not the definition that means "belief without proof"). It's a declar...
