Re: A step question.

I can only tell you how I did the steps. My sponsor is very big on the steps and after we read the first 154 pages of the Big Book, we got working. He had me do homework for each step. Then we read together the chapter on the step from the 12 and 12, discussed it, and discussed the work that I did. ...

Re: Anxiety Hitting hard Day 14

Hi Kathleen, and welcome to e-aa.org. I am a recovering alcoholic (almost a decade now) and am also a doctor. From a medical standpoint, I can tell you that it's normal for a newly-recovering alcoholic to suffer an unusually high amount of anxiety in early sobriety. Your body's central and periphera...

Re: how do you regard the new-comer once more

Hi, and welcome back. I can't really comment on how people reacted to you, they might have been saying that you already have the tools to get sober, you just need to use them. I was told in the beginning to have 20 phone numbers on me (I forgot where I read this statistic, but when you randomly call...

Re: A Question Regarding Atheists

I am going to my first meeting this evening. However, I am an atheist and I feel my choice of living without faith and religion may be a bit perplexing. I'm not arrogant or feel superior in anyway: this is just the way it is for me. Would this be a problem? Hi, and welcome. You will find that there...

Re: AA and religion.

HI MDSMITH, Congratulations on your first meeting. My name is Victor and I'm an alcoholic. I, too, was taken a back when I first heard the Lord's Prayer at the end of the meeting. I was desperate to get sober at the end, and what I ended up doing is taking what I needed from that prayer (and the Ser...

Re: Day one .....again.

After 10 days of meetings and sobriety I found myself with a drink in my hand. I had to call my sponsor this morning and tell him. I left a voicemail and he hasn't returned my call , yet. I feel horrible because I was his first sponsee. He called me last night but I was at the bar and didn't answer...

Attending drinking events

I thought I'd share this, since it comes up every now and then. My newest sponsee (four months) told me that he has to attend an event for his job in which there will be an open bar. He said he was quite nervous about attending. I asked him what he was so nervous about - he's going to meetings every...

Sobriety without the steps?

Hi All, I hope everyone is doing well. I want to post this because I am finding myself getting a bit resentful. Over the past few days I've gone to meetings, and there were a few guys there who raised their hands and said that they have a few years of sobriety, but never did the steps or got a spons...

Re: Hopeless?

That's awesome Hannah! I can't believe it's almost a year already for you. Not only are you getting sober, you are also helping the newcomer through the power of example, and you can also tell the newcomer, "If I could do it, so can you..." Actually, I hated hearing that line when I first got to the...

Re: rigorous honesty

Hi I have been sober over 20 years. I now have sponsee that is sober 2 years and i have only been with him for about 2months. He has been doing well and i am baffled and shocked when he told had stolen a pair of expensive sunglasses. He did say he was wrong to do it and would not do it again but i ...

Re: unaccepting AA group

When asked if I had been praying each night, I shared that I am trying but being that I dont know who I am praying to, it seems like I'm just in a room talking to myself. The program does not define exactly what we should name as the higher power, but it does tell us what we can't call the higher p...

Re: Psychiatrist Sponsee Has Someone Who Wants Counselling F

I see the dilemma. In my own experience I have heard of shrinks sending people to AA. I've also heard of shrinks telling their patients hat they really can't treat them until they get sober. Bottom line, AA is for drinking, shrinks are or other stuff.

Re: the insanity of it all

I hear what you're saying Tosh. The "getting to bed tonight without a drink" advice worked great for me when I was a newcomer. The point my sponsor was making to me in the very beginning was that the inner peace would come in time (and it has come for me in flashes), but in my first four or five mon...

Re: the insanity of it all

Thank you Bellingham Guy, I wish I could take credit for that quote, but it's my sponsor who deserves it. Actually, I think that's something that his sponsor told him. That's the beauty of this program-that wisdom gets passed down from one alcoholic to another. Hang in there, dude. It will get bette...

Re: Step Workbook

Hi, and welcome. I think there are some Step workbooks out there somewhere, but they usually come from treatment centers and are written by shrinks who don't really know about this disease. Follow your sponsor on step work. If (s)he gives you some worksheets, fine. Do them. But I do agree with the g...
