Re: Sneaking up on a year!

Today's the day! One year ago today I started an incredible journey. And the best is yet to come. The promises are being fulfilled, sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly.

Thanks, everyone, for the good wishes and support. Big D, April 10th. One year!

Re: Statements I cant relate

My problem wasn't that I was afraid that I would die.

My problem was that I was afraid I wouldn't.

Sneaking up on a year!

Day 358 for me today. I'll have a year next week: Wednesday, April 10th. One year ago today, I was in the depths of alcoholic haze--broken, battered, totally empty spiritually and mentally and physically. I was near death. Now the promises are coming true, a little at a time, as the book says. I am ...

Re: My sponsor fired me last night

I am the original poster. Thanks for all the replies. In a couple of weeks I will celebrate one year of sobriety. While I have not gotten a new sponsor in the traditional AA sense, I am working the steps with a licensed therapist and it is going very well. Maybe one day I will get a sponsor, maybe no...

Re: Slipped after 20 years

I want to thank everyone for your kind words. My original post was in March, 2011. I have had an amazing journey since then. the whole first year after my slip I was in and out of sobriety. I kept slipping. I kept going to meetings, sometimes drunk. The sponsor I got and worked with for about six mo...

Re: Why is it suggested to read first 164 pages in big book?

Just to play devils advocate... I wonder what would happen if I signed up for a college class and brought a text book written in 1938 to class to use. Would the professor accept it or, ask me to go to the book store a purchase the most updated version? If your college class was in composition, one ...

Re: Drink like a "normal" person? Really?

"there is no such thing as making a normal drinker out of an alcoholic. Science may one day accomplish this, but it hasn't done so yet." (Big Book, Ch. 3, More about alcoholism) I was thinking about this passage the other day. It's read at every meeting. What if medical science DID accomplish this? ...

Re: My sponsor fired me last night

First of all ... the Sponsor isn't the problem. Agreed. Never said he was. The only person that can do the work you need to do is YOU. It's that simple. Agreed. Which is why I checked into rehab after my sponsor fired me and am now in the process of taking the steps, starting on Step One, since I o...

Re: The Lord's Prayer at the end of meetings - I get it now

The "lead us not into temptation" part has always rung particularly true for me. As an agnostic, I don't mind saying the prayer. I look on it as a social custom, the words aren't that big of a deal to me, it's the unity of spirit of all of us clasping hands and sharing the power. PS congrats on the ...

Re: Afraid of social stigma associated with alcoholism

Tara, I know what you're going through. I am a high school teacher and an alcoholic. I also live in a small town, but teach 60 miles away, so I don't have that local problem you speak of. However, I did have to confront the hiring problem. When I went to my first job interviews over twenty years ago...

Re: Will I Ever Have Fun Again?

I knew I was finally done for good when my question changed from "You mean I don't get to drink ever again?" to "You mean I don't HAVE to drink ever again?" The question you pose "Will I ever have fun again" presupposes that your drinking was fun. Most of us who have quit got to AA because the drink...

Re: My sponsor fired me last night

Based on some of your previous posts you sponsor is your wife and your sponsor fired you. So he/she fired you and you are in the doghouse. Bummer... No, Marc, my wife is not my sponsor. My sponsor was a retired prison warden. We have spoken cordially since the firing and are on good terms, but we d...

Re: My sponsor fired me last night

I know you're working with mental health professionals, which is fine when it comes to mood or behavior disorders, but in regards to your alcoholism, they can't do for you what AA can do. The mental health professionals I am working with are all recovering, active members of the program of Alcoholi...

Re: My sponsor fired me last night

I wanted to check back into this thread and let everyone here know what's going on with me. First of all, thanks so much for the support and suggestions. They mean a lot to me and have helped me in my path to recovery. On April 9th I had an appointment with a doctor at the Chemical Dependency unit o...

Re: What is your Higher Power?

my higher power is, at this early point, the entire process of recovery. This process, which includes meditation, daily reflection, the steps, and continuous contact with sober recovering people, is definitely a power greater than myself, and I believe that it is keeping me sober today.
