Re: The Steps Aren't Necessary

Bill Wilson certainly believed in the steps. In his story in the Big Book he told how he worked them, not in numbers of course but the essence of them is there. If you don't believe it please read my essay on the subject. Click on my website to the right of the post.

Re: Slipped after 20 years

I am at step 3, ready to start my inventory (step 4). I am going to get a sponsor soon, and work the remaining steps with him. I believe in the steps, they work: I 've seen it. I've also seen what happens when one doesn't work the steps rigorously (one ends up pacing a 10 by 6 jail cell for sixteen...

Re: Change of Character or Behavior Modification

It is hard to believe that some of you think a discussion about the 12 steps is irrelevant in an AA forum. That amazes me. Why would a discussion about the 12 steps be irrelevant? Especially in the 12 steps section of the forum. The 12 steps literally saved my life. To me they are the most relevant ...

Re: Change of Character or Behavior Modification

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the obvious, which is step 6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character. Can we deny we're supposed to be addressing character flaws? Are we not supposed to be willing to have our defects of characer removed? Would this not imply a chang...

Re: Change of Character or Behavior Modification

Thanks for the responses. Just like in my local group, there are differences of opinion on this subject here also. Personally, I agree with what a few of you said about it being behavior modification that can lead to a change of character, if that is what is desired. Ken threw in another good point....

Re: Change of Character or Behavior Modification

Let me throw in the dictionary definition of character to make it more interesting. Character a) Moral or ethical quality - such as a man of fine, honorable character b) reputation c) an account of the qualities or peculiarities of a person or thing Has your moral or ethical quality changed as a res...

Change of Character or Behavior Modification

At last night's local f2f meeting a very interesting difference of opinion came up. I thought it would be interesting to see how our group here would respond to this. Some people believe the 12 steps are nothing more than behavior modification. Others believe the steps bring about a change of charac...
