Re: Almost 2 weeks sober but craving wine

In AAs terminology we use the phrase Obsession for the mind stuff. Craving is referred to the compulsive drinking that kicks in after we ingest 1 or 2 drinks of alcohol. Its all part of the realization phase, its good to realize as a alcoholic we have a grace period where we are able to overcome the...

Re: 10 days sober

Key understanding one should derive is, if we dont take care of our emotions we forget the consequences and will pick up. That understanding will inspire us to work the steps quickly so we have that awareness permanently.

Re: 10 days sober

Powerlessness can be classified into 2 parts. If we dont take action, we will run into blind spots like the book talks about and we will pick up the drink and then after we ingest alcohol, we loose control of the number of drinks we consume. So the solution is realizing that we are alcoholic and tha...

Re: Sponsor homework I don't think I can do

So, I’m not at all certain of the point of the “homework”. There is a school of thought where in order to test the willingness of the new-comer, the sponsor asks the candidate to interview certain number of people in his network and document those experiences of others and at the end of the year th...

Re: Sponsor homework I don't think I can do

Any suggestions? Try a different sponsor. Also suggest that you start listening to some step 1 portion of the workshops available on the internet. You will get different perspective of powerlessness and unmanageability. We dont face powerlessness every moment. But the key is "at times" the mind tri...

Re: New to this but need advice!!

Thats very nice. Yes its good to avoid such gathering initially when we are early in recovery. But as we work the steps, we will experience that the obsession has been lifted and should be able to be comfortable where alcohol is served. That is one of the promises that the program talks about as we ...

Re: 12 Steps

I'm not sure "making a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of god" works for me. I would suggest, try to imbibe the truths about powerlessness and un-manageability. See how the latter leads you into powerlessness. And then look at the rest of the process. I believe once we real...

Re: New to this but need advice!!

The guilt is still eating me up over them nights over Christmas and I need to clear my head! Is there anything in the meanwhile I can do to stop this feeling We are guilty because we think, we made a conscious decision in drinking. We alcoholics drink because of a condition. Spiritual, Mental and P...

Re: New to this but need advice!!

I think I have made progress in saying to myself “yes I have a drinking problem” and it needs to be sorted. Thats very nice. If you read the bottom of the preface to the 4th edition of the book, they do say: If you have a drinking problem, we hope that you may pause in reading one of the forty-two ...

Re: New to this but need advice!!

We have to realize deeply that we are alcoholic and we will continue to involve in uncontrolled drinking (due to the phenomenon of craving) and we won’t be able to stay away from alcohol because our mind will always trick us into taking a drink. Best help you could get is by visiting a local AA meet...

Re: Stir crazy on hols

I am so glad that I came into the fellowship in this world of internet. Access to various speakers and workshops where very vital early in my recovery and even today. Youtube or a simple search would lead you to fellow alcoholics who share their experience and knowledge on the big book. I am so grat...

Re: Addicted to addiction

You are in the right place. Many dont even recognize that they an issue. Understanding how the alcoholic/addictive mind works, you can take a deep dive into the rest of the 12 steps. So grab hold of the basic text Alcoholics Anonymous and start reading the chapters "more about alcoholism" There is a...

Re: Is my sponsor being inflexible?

I dont like the 90/90 style of sponsoring. The sponsor ideally should help someone to reach a point where they can rely on the program rather than the meetings. That for an alcoholic is very important. The racing mind needs to be quietened otherwise, people who are gravely impacted cant wait for the...

Re: Struggling with step 9

I think you did the right thing bravo on the courage to initiate the process. Somewhat like the serenity prayer, the chapter "Enlightened relationship" of Power of Now, this particular segment is so powerful, but difficult to implement, but for an alcoholic its a must. The greatest catalyst for chan...

Re: Struggling with step 9

What can I say to make him understand I was not being myself, and see that I am worth the time ? Nineth step says "Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others." The second part is crucial. Without knowing much background Its hard to suggest ...
