Re: you don't need to SUFFER! you can feel better faster!

I have to admit, I had no idea what Marco was talking about. Now that I do...well, I've seen just about everything in and outside AA. Now that I understand what he was up to, I've been sober for too many days to let things like this get to me. The choice is optional. People come and go. Some stay. A...

Re: I am at the end of my rope

As I took the decision to log into this website. I find myself having a very fearful reaction and literally feeling like I am scared to let go. Drinking has literally controlled my life and me trying to quit feels to me as if I am giving up on an old friend. I do want to stop but somehow it feels l...

Re: Power greater than ourselves - HP. Are they the same

I liked this: "When, therefore, we speak to you of God, we mean your own conception of [a] God." I don't think it matters, how you conceive of a higher power, as long as your belief is strong enough to empower you to let go of the alcoholic side of your thinking and actions. Faith in a higher power ...

Re: you don't need to SUFFER! you can feel better faster!

Hi Marco, there are in fact lots of way to become sober. AA isn't unique in that respect. Maybe there are some that work better for some people than others. I have a Ph.D in one of the behavioral sciences, but it didn't help me to stop drinking, or to stay sober, or lead a happy and productive and p...

Re: Trying again

Hi BenG23, I really can't say much more than the two previous posters. All 4 of us (including you) have similar histories regarding relationships while drinking, and I have heard your history (and mine) from the mouths of many, many alcoholics (some in recovery, others not much) over the years I hav...

[ that definately happens, splicer. ive been sober a while. when i got to a meeting ill start with,"greatful for the program and the choices its given me, the greatest choice being whether or not i pick up that next drink." ive been hammered with,"you dont have a choice!!" and ill think,"really? so ...

Re: Condescension in AA

At first, the tone of AA meetings made me feel like I was being indoctrinated in a re-education camp. In fact, AA is a sort of re-education camp. But the fact is that we all have to find our own way to inject the spirit of AA into our own lives. There are many, many ways to live a happy alcohol-free...

Re: Drunk Dreams and Sudden, Unpredictable Urges to Take a D

First, I want to note that there are different definitions describing this notion of drinking - some more dangerous than others. Urge vs compulsion... Thought vs obsession... Idea vs romancing the thought. You see where I am going and I think that the labels we give to things really do matter. If I...

Re: Most Kind?

I don't remember any unkindness in AA meetings, quite the opposite. The memories I recall most vividly are "Eskimo moments", when the most unlikely people just appeared out of nowhere to help me when I most needed it.

Re: Step 1 help please

I haven't had a drink in a long, long time. I am still powerless over alcohol, and if I take that first drink, I can see from my past that my life will quickly become unmanageable.

This is a simple program for complicated people. You and your sponsor are way overthinking this step.

Re: Judging?

We aren't saints. But I never heard any judgmental talk in AA meetings. We judge ourselves and project that on others. It's a bad habit.

Re: Too scared to go to an AA meeting

In AA meetings, you hear about yourself from others' stories about their drinking and recovery. There's no shaming, no judging.

And hardly anyone goes to their first AA meeting, thinking "I'm going to love this".

Re: The secret to long term sobriety

Practice the Program in one's daily life to the point where it becomes a habit and then don't stop. I have a daily reprieve from the hell of alcoholism, no more, no less.
