Re: New Slogans

. . . Folks with long time sobriety might take step one for granted, but for new comers, it's not always a sudden and irreversible epiphany. You say that out loud. For reasons I could only guess at, in my first year of sobriety I found myself helping a sizable number of relapsers. Their stories dif...

"Wax on. Wax off." It addresses a different set of issues, but it meant a lot to me and to my immediate circle of completely disfunctional soup kitchen and rotten tooth drunks. Hell, we used it as a greeting. :D  :o :P    =biggrin =surprised =sad 8) :?  ...

Re: Unusual Closing Prayers

In South Florida, and on Long Island, meetings are opened with the serenity prayer, (said while seated); the closing prayer is the choice of the chair or the featured speaker. Usually the Lord's prayer is chosen. It is said while standing. When it's my turn to choose, I stick with that but prior to ...

Re: Character defect - Money management

A little more on the philosophical stuff : "People who are careful with their money, generally don't become alcoholics." - Me If I had been thriftier, if I had a greater sense of financial responsibility to those around me, I would not have spent so much on alcohol. Maybe, I would not have become a...

Re: Character defect - Money management

Added to the above:
The best way to work on thrift problems is to work on them as practical matters. God gave us a brain.

That said:
A wise man once told me, if I don't work on the character defects that led to my drinking, there is a much greater chance I will return to my drinking.

Re: Character defect - Money management

Hi Jacob, I have (only) 3 years sober off a very low bottom. But I have a sponsor and my sponsor has a sponsor. All credit to them, (and page 86,) I seem to have made quite a bit of progress in 3 years. The *BEST* approach to solving the "thrift defect" is to adopt some sort of the *PRACTICAL ADVICE...

Returning to this Board

Hi All, My name is Bob (but you can call me Peter if you like), and I am DEFINITELY an alcoholic. I was an active part of these boards a while back. I really needed them then as my work schedule precluded me from participating "in the center" of my local AA group. I am back because I miss the discus...

Re: Trusting a Sponsor

Hello Rick, (and hello to my old friends. I'm baaack, -wink-). I come here at various times, especially when my work schedule gets crazy and limits my ability to attend meetings. Anyway, I was a low-bottom drunk. I have about 2-and-1/2 years sobriety. Trust issues, (some legitimate,) are common in e...

Re: CBD oil, no THC

I have never heard of an AA tell someone to stop taking prescribed Zoloft nor anything else (including mood altering drugs. antidepressants etc.) that has been prescribed by an actual doctor. When it gets shaky is when someone with a history of abusing alcohol or other mood altering substances, deci...

Re: New to AA

Welcome Carly, it 'sounds' as though you are in the right place. I have heard from and about bartenders who sobered up without leaving their jobs. My sponsor, successfully sponsored several. Their road was not easy, and, without exception they say they relied heavily on "one day at a time." It is a ...

Re: ‘Bad’ Habits From Rehab?

I am a very special kind of alcoholic. I am both an alcoholic AND stubborn. (wink) I had not held a real job for years and I was drinking 1.75 L of vodka (or more) each day. Whatever amount I drank, I was sure to leave a few inches of vodka left over at night because I would need it the next morning...

Re: ‘Bad’ Habits From Rehab?

That said, it would be impossible to say that treatment works better than non treatment. With or without treatment, the relapse rate is greater than 50%. With or without treatment, to define what works, one would have to stay in touch with the alcoholic subject being studied and ask them after 1 yea...

Re: ‘Bad’ Habits From Rehab?

In particular what Spirit Flower said in one sentence, seems to sum up the general feeling - “I think the basic weakness of all treatment is that you have to leave it; and you don't know how to take care of yourself.” Perhaps a combination of rehab and real world living, (maybe not in half way hous...
