Re: I'm a sorry excuse for a human being.

When do I hit "rock bottom"? You have reached the bottom when you stop digging yourself in deeper. Most human beings try to live by self propulsion. We think we have to do it on our own. But there is another way. Only you know if you are ready. If you want your life to be different there is a way. ...

Ignore button

Some forums have an ignore button that allows you to ignore posts by a particular person. This forum would be much more effective if it had this feature. Not only for me, but also for those who do not wish to read my posts. :) Please consider adding an ignore button.

Re: Compulsive drinker

Hi Ravensgrl, I had those same questions when I was new. I'd like to tell you how I worked them out. Early on in sobriety I had trouble adjusting to not drinking. Since my idea of fun always involved drinking, I was worried that I would never have fun again. When I talked to my sponsor about this he...

Re: A year sober but struggling

I know my HP communicates to me thru people in meetings, literature, even bus stop advertising signs (!) now this forum is added to his/her list too! This is a great quote! I have come to believe that the answer is always all around me, my HP helps me be ready to hear it. The idea that I'm not sear...

Re: March Grapevine Quote of the Day

"AA isn't for the people who need it or for the people who want it; it's for the people who are willing to do the work to get it." In the first year that I was sober I would often hear people say "Pain is the touchstone of all spiritual growth". This sounded right to me because I was only in AA bec...

Re: Just quit drinking

I was fortunate that I had tried to quit on my own many times before I discovered AA. Because I had failed so often while trying on my own, I knew that I needed support to stay sober. For me it was knowing that I needed support that kept me coming back to meetings, even when I was unwilling to accep...

Re: I do not share my story but want others to share with me

Honestly? You mean like brutal honesty?

Ok, if you sponsor people you have been around a while. So hear goes. Sharing your story heals you in ways you cannot understand if you haven't done it.

To all things there is a season, a time to listen, and a time to share.

Re: The First Home Group

Scott, everything I know about the first home group came out of the book "Dr. Bob and the good old timers". (I think I got that title right, I don't have it in front of me)

Re: The word addiction

I am reminded by this thread of a wonderful book I once read on the subject of addiction. It is called "Drinking: a love story" by Caroline Knapp. In telling her story, she describes using compulsive behaviors to avoid certain feelings. When the consequences of one behavior became to uncomfortable s...

Re: Fear of speaking and a possible misunderstanding

Christer, congrats on making it to your first meeting! It is possible that he intended something personal, but I think it is more likely that he is looking for someone to sponsor. There are people who live for AA and try to sponsor as many people as possible. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing...

What I learned at a birthday party

In my first homegroup we celebrated all the birthdays for the month at the 8:00 PM meeting on the last Monday of the month. It was the one meeting a month that nobody missed. The night I celebrated one year there were nine one-years celebrating. All of us one years were high-fiving each other and wh...

Re: To identify, or not identify, as an alcoholic

Some years ago it came to me that after years of introducing myself as an alcoholic and talking about myself as an alcoholic, that I had made bring alcoholic my identity. One day, in a meeting, I introduced myself by saying "I'm Jim and I'm an alcoholic. That is what I am but it isn't WHO I am." On...
