Re: Walked out of two meetings this week

After a long talk with my sponsor (and long time friend) and another friend who is going through the program, I made the decision yesterday that AA just isn't for me. I see the great results that the program brings for others and the way that it has turned their lives around and the more power to t...

Re: Walked out of two meetings this week

There are large quantities of individuals in the program who have masters degrees and even more advanced education than that. And I've met several people who have traveled the world. Both types in the city I live in, a "blue collar" city. So, I'm not sure what that has to do with anything. But I do ...

Re: Can a geriatric teetotaler be a latent alcoholic?

"Having people there who might not respect the stated AA principle – “Anonymity is the spiritual foundation of all our traditions...” and making a joke of our membership requirement - “The only requirement for AA membership is a desire to stop drinking...” is in my opinion a very valid reason to run...

Re: Can a geriatric teetotaler be a latent alcoholic?

Thanks Brock, I'm not disagreeing with what you say. I'm simply voicing my own opinion :D Well Laura (original OP) then I'm sorry to be the bearer of this news but since your dear friend already associate with the mental part of being an alcoholic but never drank a drop in his life, he's gonna have...

Re: Can a geriatric teetotaler be a latent alcoholic?

People try to have a reasonable discussion since this is a discussion board, nobody even hinted at “required to prove our alcoholism.” All that nonsense about crawling through the door just as your liver is on it's last legs, no need to exaggerate in a discussion, unless you realize you are farting...

Re: Can a geriatric teetotaler be a latent alcoholic?

To the OP, good luck with your friend. You sound like a kind person. It sounds like Al-Anon and ACOA would be good fits for him. As an aside: I have also heard many people being told "Don't fear going to an AA meeting as everyone is there for the same reason" and I have told people the same. I woul...

Re: Can a geriatric teetotaler be a latent alcoholic?

In certain smaller areas like the one in which I live, all meetings are 'open.' We are happy to have a non alcoholic come as support to someone who feels they might be one, but it's for the first meeting maybe two at most. In smaller communities we see each other often outside of meetings, we encou...

Re: Step 12 Conundrum

Thanks friends. I did not mention it because as you eluded to, it was a work situation but also like I mentioned in my OP, this alcohol "issue" did not seem to bother either of them in the least, so I didn't feel it was up to me to tell someone who views his behavior as a source of accomplishment th...

Step 12 Conundrum

Hello friends, It's been quite some time since I have posted! As some of you have suggested to me previously, I have indeed been keeping busy, including taken up a new hobby! haha ;) In all seriousness though, you all have shown me when my thinking is not sober. Thank you for these gifts. I have a q...

Re: Please advise, friends on a lady I'm temporarily assisti

Thank you all so much. A bit of an update: the temporary sponsee contacted me telling me unfortunately that she will no longer be going to meetings. I do not know if she has relapsed or not, she says she hasn't. She blamed the other young woman entirely, because she had asked her to stop contacting ...

Re: Please advise, friends on a lady I'm temporarily assisti

Perhaps I should walk away from this sponsorship as I don't see how I can be helpful if this woman is not interested in doing the steps. She goes to lots of meetings, and that is a good thing, however even the meetings she chooses to attend are dwindling, because there is always someone else in att...

2 Questions

Hello again friends, I have 2 questions for you all that I would love some opinions on please. 1) If someone with over 1 year of sobriety were to ask your advice/opinion on how many meetings they "should" attend weekly, what would your answer or recommendation be? 2) If a person feels "stretched too...

Re: Please advise on the proper channels/authorities

Unless I was the harasser or the harassee, I would not take it upon myself to determine nor contact whoever the proper channels/authorities might be. I would leave that decision up to the two people directly involved in the situation. I thought Emerald was asking how to advise her sponsee in the si...

Re: Please advise, friends on a lady I'm temporarily assisti

Thank you all so much. Perhaps I was playing god here. I had wanted to take this woman through the steps perhaps to avoid further destruction to herself and others, even possibly going back out. However, I cannot control that. And middle aged individuals like this woman probably do not just start su...
