A World Apart

Are we pushing people away from AA? When AA co-founder Bill W. wrote the Big Book and Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, he managed - despite his ego - to discuss the AA way of life with a mixture of passion and humility. Though I fall short, I aspire to this combination of passion and humility ab...

We are not doctors. We are alcoholics.
Please don't discuss medication here.
There are many other sites where you can discuss about this topic.

If you ask yourself the question whether or not you are an alcoholic, I'd say you are on.
"Normal" drinkers or people that don't have a problem with alcohol, don't ask themself that question.
So, the fact that you worry about it, says it all.

Hi, Almost 10 years ago, I joined AA after I tried to quit on my own for about 2 years. Since then, I'm sober. Joining AA is one of the few decisions in my life that I don't regret, as a matter of fact, it's probably the best decision I have ever made. Without it, I wouldn't be alive anymore. Good l...

Re: How does one deal with all of this?

Hi Zena, glad you found us. I'm Vera, and I am an alcoholic. I used to be such an angry alcoholic. Anger was the only feeling I allowed. All other feelings I numbed with drinking, basically because I didn't want to feel them, didn't want to feel mental pain. And I had a lot of them. It was much easi...

Meeting-Makers Make it

They do more than just show up. Many people think the slogan, "Meeting-makers make it," means that going to meetings guarantees sobriety. I have a different understanding, and it comes from my first meeting on October 13, 1990. For me, the miracle was not attending my first AA meeting, but that I e...

Re: Grapevine winner and report August 2006

August issue The August 2006 issue of the AA Grapevine has special section about Life on Life's Terms. In "Okay with Me" an AA gets comfortable with the Serenity Prayer. The person starts with the second word of the Serenity Prayer, skipping the word "God". He also calls it a mantra because that so...

Re: Grapevine Winner and Report July 2006

My name is Vera and I am an alcoholic July issue The July 2006 issue of the AA Grapevine has special section about AAs Behind Bars . It's been an impressive experience for me to read how people in prison or jail work on their sobriety. One might expect that there is no alcohol in that place, no temp...

Happiness Overrated?

An alcoholic takes stock. I sometimes find myself irritable, restless, discontented, or depressed for no apparent reason at all. Today, in my recovery, it usually doesn't take long before I suffer from ill attitudes or behaviors direclty linked to what I describe as being disconnected, or in a stagn...

My name is Vera and I am an alcoholic June issue The June 2006 issue of the AA Grapevine has special section about Stories from Native Americans. The story "In My Father's Footsteps" has a very powerful message. It's about the father of an alcoholic, an Indian, that got sober in 1954 in a place with...
