Not sure if I understand the OP

Someone asked me about getting a Christmas gift for their sponsor, I really didn't know. What do you guys think? Why would you get a Christmas gift for their sponsor (who you really don't know)? I'm a guy; I think it's a strange question. AA men don't do this , typically. Men don't think about this...

I'm not sure why No3 is talking about LSD in terms of using it recreationally; it was thought to have helpful medical properties Hi Tosh, Yeah I didn't understand that post either; see third quote. So far as I know, Belladonna was never a known recreational drug (some idiot will always prove the ex...

How it went down, same book p.164

I made the announcement at the Oxford Group that this was the last time the Cleveland bunch was down as a contingent — that we were starting a group in Cleveland that would only be open to alcoholics and their families. Also that we were taking the name from the book ‘Alcoholics Anonymous’. The roo...

timeline?

From what I read it was the Cleveland Group, Al G, T Henry, and Clarence, that first broke away from the OG. But holding on to many aspects of the OG, the largest difference I have read is "care of God"" (AS WE UNDERSTOOD HIM) Although I've just read online "January 1938: New York A.A. split from t...

Christian behavior and amends?

Bill Wilson borrowed lots of A.A. ideas directly from Rev. Sam Shoemaker. He did not admit this publicly, for ~15 years. That long silence is telling. In 1937, Bill & Lois Wilson had been viciously purged from the OG by Shoemaker, probably under Frank Buchman's orders ("guidance.") Bill must have fe...

Selfish Fear, as on BB p.62

“We reviewed our fears thoroughly. We put them on paper, even though we had no resentment in connection with them. We asked ourselves why we had them. Wasn't it because self-reliance failed us? Self-reliance was good as far as it went, but it didn't go far enough.” P.68 But you yourself are twistin...

Should = ought to?

Hi folks. Is there anyone out there who can confirm whether or not it states in the Big Book that AA'ers should join the church? There seems to be a movement in my town that states this from the Big Book... As others noted, AA does NOT tell us we must join churches, temples, mosques or synagogues ....

How the BB was written, according to a witness (Jim B.)

It's interesting how money-driven the book project sounds, and that "How It Works" was written in about seven days, factoring mimeo & edits! Bill started his actual writing of our book in the later part of June 1938 in Hank Parkhurst’s office in Newark, with Hanks secretary, Ruth Hock, taking dictat...

I've been recently asked to spons friend

We met today. He has been through the Steps before, his BB is all marked up. I'm surprised at how little he seems to know, given all that writing! But it doesn't matter, really. We don't get graded on this. He says he's reading pp.86-88 daily; we'll read Step 1 in the 12&12 next time. should I just ...

Meeting and more meetings

I tried to find the original topic and my post, but I probably deleted it along with many others that day. one silly assumption and I was ready to exit. Unless you're a mod (a very distinct possibility, I'll grant) you cannot delete OTHER's OPs. Search functions reveals: none of my OPs on th...

Well this, actually.

Perhaps too much importance is being put on what a sponsor actually is (or should be). I'd suggest that whatever both individuals expect is certainly an important factor in this relation, so it begs careful definition. Alternately, It's a dodge, and totally unthinking (mindless) to say "No expectat...

BOUNDARY Issue

I wonder how many people thinking What does it matter? would honestly be comfortable w/ any near-strangers calling you their "sponsor" ? Hmm. I'm not nearly so desperate for sponsees or naive to consequences. I had NO DIFFICULTY honestly answering "I have NO IDEA who that is" when called by a parole...

BOUNDARY issue? Sponsees you didn't know you had

As distinct from the sponsor-sponsee relationship you actively engage in, what does "sponsorship" mean with those you don't see, don't talk to, don't interact with on a daily/weekly basis? When AA was new, and recovering Alcoholics lived great distances from the nearest meeting, the sponsor might ha...

"If it ain't broke don't fix it!"

Be careful when dismantling anything that you know how to reconstruct it otherwise you may be left with a disconnected pile of unworkable junk. Or of course you could write your own original guide to sobriety, don't be surprised however when it is dissected and mauled by others for their own egoic ...
