Re: is this for real?

I don't have experience as a heroin user. As an alcoholic, I've found it essential to attend meetings, work the 12 steps, have a sponsor, call other people in the program weekly on the phone, read the Big Book, read other recovery literature and information, help others, participate ACTIVELY in serv...

Re: Grab your highlighter

"Taking a trip, not taking a trip". This paragraph in "More About Alcoholism" always makes me laugh. It describes many of my efforts to drink like other people, all of which failed miserably. One day I realized I could not drink anymore - alcohol was taking everything I cared about. But I knew I wou...

Re: Step one- is it too easy

First step was very difficult for me. Until I got my a$$ kicked thoroughly and completely by alcohol and surrendered. Flew the white flag. Said "That's it, I'm done, lack of power IS my dilemma". I guess I'd better go find some power...

But it was a long fight.

Re: Too much time, still no sobriety...

Hi Selectively Sweet, I think it's hard to diagnose why anyone has difficulty getting/staying sober. Working the steps is critical and the first thing to look at if sobriety eludes you. I tried to get sober for 4 or 5 years and the best I could do was 6 months. Then the progression of the disease be...

Re: Day 1 New to AA

Stay close to the program and fellowship, especially close when new. I found sobriety has to be the #1 priority in my life before all else. Some people prioritize as God, sobriety, everything else..., which is true too. Life is really good when I keep my priorities straight. Glad you liked your firs...

Re: So Far, Disappointed

No, Kaliare, all meetings are not the same.

Like people, they all have their own personality. If you didn't like the experience you had, try some others. I would not judge the whole recovery fellowship on one or two meetings.

Shop around, you'll find some that feel comfortable.

Re: Came to believe

PuppyEars, (do you really have puppy ears?) Anyway, yes, I had a vital spiritual experience. It might not have been as visual and auditory as some described, but I admitted I was licked, and I asked God as I understood him to take over running the show. I resigned and gave it to Him. And I felt some...

Re: One Year Sober. Do I need the rooms?

Congrats on a year - that's wonderful. The reason to keep going to meetings is that the problem centers in our mind. I've got issues with forgetting certain pieces of information like - I can't have just one. I can't tolerate any. People at meetings remind me that I need to work the steps, be honest...

Re: hey, i have a big issue with alcohol

Shadower, It's never to early to get sober and have a good life. First thing to do is put the plug in the jug. Try not to drink for a day, or an hour at a time. Then, at the same time, get out to some meetings. Listen and see if you can relate. You'll find hope there, and people who've been where yo...

Re: drinking and going to meetings

Akela, I've been where you are. See if you can do it on the 24 hour plan first. An hour at a time. Spare time during the day? Go to another meeting. Enlist the help of a sponsor. If you can't do it that way? You're not the first; think about detox, treatment, or even a halfway house. A halfway house...
