Re: Do Open Meetings Vary By City / Country?

in the meetings I've attended in Australia and New Zealand (which is a lot - almost 7 years sober and I travel for work constantly), most meetings are open and most do not have an invited speaker. So if you attend an open meeting, you'll usually be invited to speak. Indeed, they almost always invite...

Re: Social anxiety? Dating? Alcohol.

I'm extremely socially anxious sober (although less gender-specific) but it's gotten better with time - slower than I'd like but better nonetheless. Don't worry too much about a relationship, it sounds a little soon. I can't read from your post whether your fear is only around extreme crush shyness ...

Offer place to stay and they start drinking again.

A friend also in program was experiencing domestic violence so I let her move in. Obvious rule no drinking. She had a rough few days and has been binge drinking in my house, bringing random dudes home etc. Feel like a total ass if I leave her homeless but have zero interest in having someone drink i...

Explaining to a child

I got sober two years ago when my daughter was three. I took her to meetings in the early days when I was trying to get a lot in, but now i just go once a week when she's at her dad's and sometimes on my lunch break when I'm working in the city. She didn't know or ask what they were about when she d...

Re: How powerful is prayer? I find it amazing

I concur with Brock about the emphasis on kneeling, or a specific understanding of 'how' we must pray. I started the program as an atheist and converted to religion during my sobriety. However, I belong to a church that has strong beliefs about eschewing ritual in favour of simplicity. From both sta...

Re: how do you tell people?

I found that it came up a lot, because of the kind of work i do (bartending), the kind of hobbies I have (playing live music in dive bars) and the fact I'm a young Australian - no one not drinks over here. I don't know if it works for everyone, but I just said I was on 'a detox'. Which was not actua...

Re: Fixing a relationship while getting sober

I can relate to an extent as me and my partner were on the off side of on-again off-again relationship when I got sober, and we are now kind of on-again, but not living together... it's complex to say the least. We have a child together though so there is perhaps an added layer of commitment to maki...

Re: Withdrawl Inquiries

So yes, when I said never too much tmi, we are all friends here, I really meant: don't worry buddy. There's this dude tosh on here and he will out tmi you any day. And we all still like him so you're pretty safe to discuss your poop whenever you like. ;)

Re: One year today.

Aw, thanks guys! Paige, I'm afraid I actually joined 8 months before my last drink, not four months after. When I first came to AA, I got 90 days up, but didn't do step work and didn't really quite get my head around step one. I decided I wasn't a 'real alcoholic' and could moderate. A few days of m...
